Sarah's Morocco Adventure: Top 10 Highlights

Traveller sat at Park Guell, Barcelona

When I say “I had the best time!” what I really mean is… I loved Morocco Adventure and I’d do it all over again - in exactly the same way! Because the best thing about a group trip is that you don’t miss a thing. I can say I’ve seen, tasted and experienced the best of Morocco, with an amazing group of new friends and a local group leader along the way.

Here are my top 10 highlights of our 7-Day Morocco Adventure:

1) Took a Sunset Camel Ride 🐫

Travellers on camel ride in the Sahara Desert

There are two things that belong together in Morocco: sunsets and camels. Not to mention the sugary soft sands of the Sahara desert! As soon as we arrived in Merzouga, we were mounted onto our camels and were heading straight for the dunes. The perfectly untouched sand looked incredible. Step by step, we journeyed further away from camp and deeper into the desert, where we found the perfect spot on top of the dunes to watch the sunset.

2) Stayed in a Desert Camp 🥁⛺️

Our camels led us straight to our desert camp - a place more magical than I ever imagined. Nestled among the dunes, the camp was steeped in Moroccan tradition. I’m talking mint tea on arrival, tagine for dinner and a night around the campfire, playing music under a blanket of stars! We even got to have a go at playing traditional Moroccan instruments, like the qraqeb (metal castanets) and tamtams (double drums).

3) Explored Aït Ben Haddou 🏰

It’s not every day you can visit a movie set! Aït Ben Haddou, aka this incredible Kasbah, was once a trading point between Marrakesh and the desert. Nowadays, it’s well-known as an iconic film location for Game of Thrones and Gladiator. We spent the afternoon here, exploring its cobbled alleys and calling by local stalls that sold all kinds of souvenirs, from colourful tapestries to sparkling crystals and unique coffee paintings. At the top of the Kasbah, we enjoyed the sweeping views of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains - which we could see for miles!

4) Tasted Moroccan Cuisine 🥘

Ah, the food! 🤤 Tagine, couscous and mint tea were on the menu, and I couldn’t resist trying them. Each bite was bursting with flavour, and if there’s one thing better than eating it, it’s learning to cook it. In the desert, we made Medfouna (a Moroccan flatbread stuffed with chicken/vegetables and spices) and buried it directly in the sand to cook it! Then at the accommodation in Aït Ben Haddou, we learnt Morocco’s most iconic dish - chicken tagine! We added every spice you can name - cumin, turmeric, paprika, and more. It’s definitely a dish I’ll be making at home.

Brb, cooking tagine…

5) Sandboarding 🏂

One of my favourite moments from the trip! If you’re going to the Sahara Desert, there’s no better way to fully immerse yourself in the landscape than by sandboarding. A small group of us headed straight for the tallest and steepest dune and climbed our way to the top. Sliding down on the sandboard with the endless desert view was incredible! Nothing beats it.

6) Hiked through Dades Gorge ⛰️

On day 3 of the tour, we hopped off the minibus to explore Dades Gorge. We did the Monkey Fingers trek through the canyon, named after its uniquely shaped rock formations, and it took about 1-2hours. This scenic route offered multiple photo opportunities alongside the towering limestone cliffs and flowing rivers. These views will (literally) take your breath away!

7) Sunrise Hot Air Balloon 🌅

A 4 am start? No, thank you. But, for an unreal sunrise over Marrakesh’s Red Desert? I’m up! Believe me, it was worth it. Marrakesh was the perfect place for my first hot air balloon ride. Soaring over the Red Desert and admiring the sunrise from the sky was a bucket list experience, despite landing in a bush! Afterwards, we had a delicious breakfast back at the camp from wherewe had taken off.

8) The Souks in Marrakesh 🛍️

The city where my Morocco adventure began! With its colourful souks, traditional restaurants and lively Medina, it was the perfect place to meet my group. We wandered through endless alleys and markets selling everything from authentic leather to fake Gucci hats. Morocco’s souks have something for every traveller.

9) Toured the Sand Dunes on 4x4s 🚘

The whole group decided to add on this optional extra activity. We got such a rush of adrenaline as our Moroccan driver carved up the sand dunes, always taking the most unpredictable route around the amazing scenery. Along the way, we stopped off at a Moroccan music society, coal mines and a camel farm to see how these friendly animals are looked after.

10) The Valley of One Thousand Kasbahs 🌵

Imagine driving down an endless road dotted with mud-brick structures - the ruins of ancient fortresses and kasbahs. This iconic valley makes an incredible landscape you simply have to visit! The journey is the destination as you head from Skoura to Merzouga, soaking in views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance.

I had the best time on Morocco Adventure and think everybody needs to experience a group tour in Morocco once in their life (I’m definitely not biased 🤭)!
